Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019

Citizenship Amendment Act, CAB, CAA 2019

The Citizenship Amendment Act passed in the Parliament of India on 11 Dec 2019. This act gives Indian citizenship to the minority class people of Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afganistan.
Since the Bill passed in the Lok Sabha of Parliament of India it has faced huge criticism around the whole nation from northeast to Gujrat and from Kashmir to Tamil Nadu.
The protest in various parts of the country is due to various reasons as follows:
  • In the Northeast, the protest is because the Act will give citizenship to migrants and this will lead to the damage their tribal culture and lifestyle
  • While in central India the protest is because the Act ignored the Muslims.
  • Some protest because they think the Act harms the fundamental soul of the Indian Constitution
  • Some protest because they think that their Indian citizenship will be snatched away because they are Muslims
  • While some protest just for their political purposes and to oppose the ruling party
The Act is still facing large scale protests around the whole nation. Earlier it was nonviolent and peacefull but the patient didn't last long and the peaceful protest turned violent. At first, the NorthEast states lead the protest peacefully and the Various Indian Universities like Jamia Milia Islamia and AMU also organized a peaceful protest against the Act. But turned extremely violent in the blink of an eye. Buses and vehicles have been torched, public and private property destroyed, Attack on Policemen, Lathicharge, and firing of smoke grenades.
In response to the situation, the Internet facility has been shut down in various parts of the country and many metro stations are also closed. Section 144 has been applied in various parts of the country and restricts any unlawful gathering.

CAA,CAB, Protest, Democracy

Along with the protest much fake news, photographs, and videos are also flooding the social media which intends to raise alarm and spread violence among the people. Some mischievous elements are also trying to start communal riots, while some show harmony and peace.

Political Parties like the Congress, Samajwadi Party, Bahujan Samaj Party, Assam based All India United Democratic Front, Nationalist Congress Party, the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), Telangana Rashtra Samithi, Bahujan Samaj Party, Aam Admi Party, Sikkim Krantikari Morcha, Communist Party of India (Marxist) opposed the Bill while Biju Janta Dal (BJD), YSR Congress party(YSRCP), Janta Dal (United), Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal), Shiv Sena, Lok Janshakti Party, Agatha Sangama of Meghalaya's National People's Party, BJP led Northeast Democratic Alliance like NPF, NDPP, MNF, etc supported the bill.
This means that 11 Parties opposed the bill and 10 Parties supported the bill. It is also seen that many political leaders who supported the bill earlier are now opposing it.

The major reason for the violent protest has appeared to be the combination of CAB & NRC. When CAB gives citizenship to all but Muslims and NRC needs the people to prove themselves as citizens of India with documents as proofs. Now together they appear to be a tool where CAB will give citizenship to Muslims and if they are unable to show the required documents they will be named out of NRC and hence they will loose their Indian Citizenship.

While the government keeps saying that there is nothing to worry about there is still a situation of uneasiness in the Nation.

Everyone has their own different perspective but if we don't know what the Act actually says them we are definitely not responsible enough. So before taking sides, we should first read the original Act at first.

(Disclaimer: All the facts mentioned are true as per the sources available on the internet. We respect the constitution of the Republic of India and all the communities. We do not wish to disrespect any caste, religion, community, culture, etc knowingly or unknowingly. The readers are requested to read with patience.)
(Appeal: Right to freedom of expression is the spine as well as the beauty of Democracy and hence I request the leaders, if they are engaged in such protest please keep them peaceful and non-violent. India is also known for Mahatma Gandhi.)
