India Celebrates its National Mathematics Day on 22 December every year. It's also the Date of Birth of the Great Indian Mathematician Shrinivas Ramanujan. On 26 Dec 2012 then Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh announced the date of birth of S. Ramanujan as the National Mathematics Day during the inaugural ceremony of the celebrations at IIT Madras. Since then it is celebrated as the National Mathematics Day in India.

5 Great Mathematicians of India

1. Srinivasa Ramanujan


Srinivasa Ramanujan is the genius who won several accolades in the field of Mathematics. Without any formal education in pure Mathematics, he did several contributions in the analytical theory of Numbers, continued Fractions, Infinite Series, and elliptic Functions. 
"The Man Who Knew Infinity" directed by Matt Brown is also based on the life of Ramanujan.

2. C.S. Seshadri


Conjeevaram Srirangachari Seshadri is an Eminent Indian Mathematician born on 29 February 1932. He is well known for his works in Algebraic Geometry. The Sheshadri Constant is named after him. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan award along with many other honors for his contributions to Mathematics. 

3. P.C. Mahalanobis


Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis was an Indian Scientist and Statistician. He is well known for being a member of the first Planning Commission of free India. He is best known for Mahalanobis distance, a statistical measure. He founded the Indian Statistical Institute. He is considered as the Father of Modern Statistics in India. He also made pioneering studies in anthropometry in India.

4. Bhaskara II


Bhaskara II, also called Bhaskaracharya or Bhaskara the learned, was the leading Mathematician and astrologer of the 12th century. He is also considered as the best Mathematician of Medieval India. His main work Siddhanta Shiromani is divided into four parts which deal with Arithmetic, Algebra, Mathematics of Planets and Spheres.
The Indian Space Research Organisation also launched the "Bhaskara II" satellite in his honor. 

5. Aryabhata


Aryabhata is a well-known astronomer and Mathematician of classical India. His works include Aryabhattiya and the Arya-Siddhanta. The Mathematical part of Aryabhattiya covers Algebra, plane Trigonometry, Spherical Trigonometry, Quadratic equations, Continued fractions, sums of power series and a table of Sines. He also gave zero its symbolical representation which was called "Shunya" at that time.
