Diwali
Diwali
Diwali is right at our door now. This is the festival which
enlightens the whole Nation with lights and joy. It’s celebrated as
symbol of victory of light over darkness. According to Hindu
mythology it is celebrated as the day when Lord Rama returned to his
kingdom of Ayodhaya after fourteen years. It is the most awaited
festival.
People celebrate Diwali by worshipping Goddess Laxmi and Lord
Ganesha. They share and eat sweats and various other dishes, decorate
their homes and light firecrackers.
Along with the light and joy Diwali brings, for Delhi it brings
something else too. Yes, you guessed it right, it’s pollution.
Delhi is the National capital and in Diwali season it becomes the
pollution capital too. From the beginning of Navratrey it starts and
goes on till November leaving a smoking impact which lasts for the
whole season. Although burning crackers is banned in Delhi especially
on these days some people never learn. Every year we campaign
“Clean Diwali, Green Diwali”
but still instead of O2
we breathe CO, CO2,
SO2,
and what not. The Air Quality Index only stays at Red and we keep
coughing. Breathing in Delhi is like making rings from 9 Cigarettes.
To worsen the conditions smoke from slash burning in Haryana and
Punjab
also reaches the Delhi NCR.
Gurugram, Faridabad, Noida,
Gaziabad, Bahadurgarh are the worst affected regions along with
Delhi. It’s like a competition among these cities like who will
reach the worst AQI. Records breaks every year and the AQI likes it
high and stays above 600.
But believe me, with every
cracker and sparkle we burn to get a little bit of momentary joy it’s
like taking a day out of our lives.
The Government is also taking
various steps like Odd- Even, Laser
shows on Diwali and Dushehra,
etc, but most of these are short termed solution. Ban on crackers is
a good one but it is not implemented and forced with the seriousness
that is needed. The Government and authorities must work smartly. If
they award people who inform police about the places where these
crackers are sold, they can be shut down. It will decrease the
pollution at a huge scale because the sellers will be afraid to sell
and the people will have extra gifts for their family. It will make
the Diwali brighter but not by the crackers.
Self awareness and implementation
is the need of the hour. We all know the situation still some of us
get ignorant and do the stupid. We educated youth should raise the
alarm in our neighbourhood and let no smoke rise.
Let’s not just pledge this
time, as it never enough.
We must get out, shout and stop
what’s wrong.
